Auto Theft

Auto Theft

The Auto Theft Task Force is the newest addition to the duties performed by detectives in the Berks County District Attorney’s Office. Auto theft is one of the largest property crimes committed in Berks County. Detective Barry Whitmoyer is assigned to this unit. Detective Whitmoyer joins officers from the Reading Police Department who are assigned to assist troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police, to investigate auto theft in and around Berks County.

The Auto Theft Task force works in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Auto Theft Prevention Authority. The authority was established by the General Assembly (Act 171 of 1994). The Authority funds activities in Pennsylvania to prevent, combat, and reduce automobile theft.

The Authority uses no tax dollars. Its funds are raised through annual assessments paid by nearly 400 auto insurance companies doing business in Pennsylvania. These funds facilitate a cooperative effort by the insurance industry, law enforcement agencies, and the citizens of the commonwealth.

The Pennsylvania Auto Theft Prevention Authority also provides a free VIN etching kit to deter thieves from stealing your car. See their website for additional details.
